The Stilfser Joch National Park

In the Vinschgau area, nature has many faces. You will find a wonderful variety on every corner however; experiencing the Stilfser Joch National Park puts everything else in a different light.

The park was created in 1935 and is a successful example of the peaceful co-existence of nature and cultural landscape.

It is a constant challenge to blend untouched landscape with the agricultural areas in mountainous seclusion and mountain farms, cultivated all year round. The result, however, makes it all worthwhile. Here, you will find all kinds of things: from the Ortler mountain (4,000 metres high) and a glacier-like high mountain region, to Alpine meadows and slopped terraces into the valleys. .

The National Park consists of 333,000 acres - only one third of which is on South Tyrolean territory – although, it should not be considered as being a cut off, sterile open-air museum. Guided tours, excursions, slide shows and much more is offered in order to help locals and guests familiarise themselves with the park.

You probably won’t have an encounter with a wolf or bear in the National Park, but the variety of living animals is breath-taking: red deer, roe deer, chamois, ibex, fox and marmot, even badgers and weasels are at home here. If you walk through the park with an open eye, you will also discover buzzards, hawks, owls and golden eagles.

The professionals are very proud of the re-colonisation of the vulture – two vultures were released in the Martell Valley during last year.

During our guided hiking trips, we will introduce you to this great mountain world and let you experience unique spectacles of nature. We will guide to you clear glacier lakes and bubbling mountain streams, and on the way, your professional National Park guide will explain to you the very varied flora and fauna.
